What a load of rubbish!

Let me spend this posting on venting my frustrations on the current administration of University Malaya Medical Center and the medical faculty of UM.

Many may be familiar with the Emergency and Trauma Center of UMMC. The building looks impressive but never judge a book by its cover. Firstly the builidng does not even have a Certificate of Fitness(CF) as has been inadvertently disclosed to me. There are many safety specifications that have not been complied with. This includes the important water sprinkling system in the event of a fire. Nevertheless, the administrators of UMMC has decided in the comforts of their offices on the 14th Floor, that this building is fit for operation. Is it not illegal to operate in a building without a CF? Is this not negligence?

Secondly, the staffing for this gigantic building is poor. There are critical shortages of doctors employed by the UMMC. As such, they have resorted to "forcing" Masters students in other departments to fill the void. In spite of this, there are certain doctors who get special priviledges of not doing shift work despite being a medical officer in an Emergency Department. The have been accorded an unofficial senior post which should have not existed in the first place. Such cronyism is despicable.

Even administration in the medical faculty is fraught with inefficiency and incompetency. Most individuals in adminstrative positions including professors are not receptive to dialogues not in their favour. Despite certain irregularities and clear inconsistencies, many have turned a blind eye. Masters students, it seems, are now "students" and thus are no longer accorded the opportunity for a mature dialogue with individuals like professors. A recent question on a need for a repeat Emergency posting so close to an examination has culminated in attacks on my personal integrity and work ethics. I feel this to be higly unprofessional and disrespectful to a colleague in medicine. My efforts and hard work has been belittled by a question that I felt truly concerned about. This tiff has left me flabberghasted and has led me to seriously rethink continuing in an organisation where its leaders show no compassion.

In short, my experience in UM and UMMC has been an eye opening experience on the true nature of bureaucracy in Malaysia and how cronyism not only resides in politics but other agencies as well. My enthusiasm for medicine has been greatly stunted by such nightmarish encounters with individuals supposedly in a position of great integrity.
